In the house of my enemy – Charles de Lint
In a book of short stories (urban fairie tales to be exact) by Charles de Lint called Dreams Underfoot, there is a very poignant and sad story call “In the House of My Enemy.” The story talks about a character that is 15 years old who ran away from an abusive home many years prior and ended up becoming a hooker on the streets. The story picks up with her pregnant where she comes across Jilly Coppercorn, a character that is woven through all of Charles de Lint’s story lines.
What is so amazing about this story is how it talks about the abuse of the child. Molestation and the rages that are carried out of the innocent that does more damage than can possibly be imagined and it is all written with simplicity. It is actually the simplicity that comes across and makes it point more than rages and rants ever could.
Sometimes the strongest message is said with silence more than with words.
