Circular Logic

I am a huge fan of Neil Gaiman’s blogs. Not because he expounds on any fascinating subjects nor does he provide any great enlightenment. He is just a writer (a brilliant one, don’t get me wrong) who writes about his daily life and all the exciting/non exciting things he does.

Today’s blog was about him being recognized at a movie theatre, but the thing that caught me about the blog was the dialog. I fell into the moment and it was like watching a movie and I thought ‘wow, I wish I could write so brilliantly’ and then I remembered he was a writer and that is what he DOES (hmm, blondness is attacking my brain) but then I tried to think of it as someone just blogging about their day and the mundane-ness (if it wasn’t a word, it is now) of it and fell into it again like a movie.

And if you are reading this and wondering what is my point, the title of the blog is Circular Logic. Has anyone ever got stuck in one of those internal loops?

(Below, the blog copied as published… BTW, I love the fact he had misspellings and Word had issues with his grammar. See, there is hope for me yet!)

Holly and I had gone to see The Simpsons movie together. We drove back not saying anything.

After a while, Holly sighed. “You brought that on yourself, Dad. You wrote the bit in your blog today about not being recognised and not wanting to be famous. And now that happens. See?”

“I could move,” I said. “I could head off to the Scottish Highlands. Or Patagonia. I could absolutely go to Patagonia and leave no forwarding address.”

“Oh dad,” said Holly. And then she pointed out, “You aren’t allowed to vanish mysteriously until Maddy’s eighteen.”

“I could wear a hat,” I said, a bit desperately.

“It wouldn’t do any good,” she said. And she may be right. And if I brought it on myself by writing my previous blog entry then maybe if I don’t actually talk about it on this one it won’t happen again…
